Injectables and Fillers

Today’s dermal fillers and injectables offer patients a simple solution for filling facial hollows, depressions, wrinkles and scars, enhancing lips and cheeks, and treating facial lines. Dermal fillers and injectables are generally divided into two broad categories: those which treat static wrinkles, and those intended to reduce or eliminate the appearance of dynamic wrinkles. Static wrinkles are lines which occur as a result of sagging or loss of elasticity and moisture retention; dynamic wrinkles appear as a result of facial expression, such as smiling or frowning.

JUVÉDERM® is the most popular dermal filler and injectable which treats static wrinkles. This product is derived from hyaluronic acid, a substance which occurs naturally in skin and other tissues, offering natural "plumping".

For dynamic wrinkles is another kind of injectable product is good. This extremely popular dermal injectable blocks nerve signals which trigger muscle contractions during facial expression. By blocking the nerve signals, the muscles do not contract, and frown lines, crow’s feet, and other dynamic wrinkles can’t form.

With any of these products, there is no downtime, although you may experience some temporary redness and minor discomfort in the injection area. The cost of your treatment will be based on the number of injections required.

Dermal fillers are becoming increasingly popular as a means to help reverse the changes associated with aging. Because the goal is to return the dermis to its original youthful state, dermal fillers can give a more natural appearance than surgical face lifts. Dermal fillers are being used to reduce or eliminate wrinkles, raise scar depressions, enhance lips, and replace soft-tissue volume loss.

As our skin ages, the dermis gradually loses its major constituents: collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Collagen acts as the major support protein for our skin, elastin allows our skin to stay firm and resist wrinkles, and hyaluronic acid helps to trap water and add volume and shape to our skin.

Types of Dermal Fillers:

A variety of dermal fillers are available in Hungary today. Some of the most popular include collagen based fillers, hyaluronic acid based fillers (i.e. JUVÉDERM®), poly lactic acid based fillers (i.e. Sculptra) and calcium hydroxylapatite fillers such as Radiesse. The medial and cosmetic industries are continually developing new technologies and treatments, so new products are constantly being tested and made available, with dermal fillers being no exception.

All types of filler materials can all help improve the youthful appearance and fullness of facial skin, but there are differences in the way each behaves and the duration of time the results of each filler will last. For example, lips tolerate fillers differently than the cheek areas do, and not all fillers can be injected in the lips.

The duration of results are depending on the filler being used. Although location can also affect the duration of results, for example, fillers tend to provide results that last significantly less time in the lips, compared to nasolabial folds. Collagen based products typically provide the shortest duration of results. Hyluronic acid based fillers tend to endure for longer, with effects usually lasting from six months to one and a half year.

Most injectable fillers are administered in just a few minutes, and any discomfort can be managed with topical or injectable anesthetics. The physician will use a thin needle to inject the dermal filler into the wrinkles, folds, or scars where treatment is desired. Some minor initial discomfort is normal, but should be brief, as most patients are comfortable returning to work or other daily activities immediately.

Side effects are uncommon but can include limited allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), reactivation of an existing herpes infection, localized bruising, redness or swelling at the injection site, and in very rare instances, vascular occlusion and ulceration.

Dermal filler FAQ

What are Facial Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are substances that are injected just below the surface of the skin to fill in lines, wrinkles, and scars. Unlike face lifts that stretch the skin, fillers add volume for a more natural youthful appearance. Fillers can also increase the fullness of the lips (see section on lip enhancement) and lessen the downward slant of the corner of lips. The most common areas treated are the smile lines around the nose and mouth, fine lines above the mouth, frown lines between the eyes.

Two Classes of Dermal Fillers:

Permanent and temporary. The main permanent dermal filler in use today is silicone. There are a variety of temporary dermal fillers currently in use: Hyaluronic acid (Juvéderm, Teosyal, Stylage), hydroxyappetite, sculptra, fat, and collagen. Temporary fillers are absorbed by the body over time, usually in 6 months and require repeated treatments to maintain the effect.

What Is JUVÉDERM®  Injectable Gel?

As we age, our skin changes. Over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form. Approved by the FDA, JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is a "next-generation" dermal filler. The smooth consistency gel helps to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your "smile lines" (nasolabial folds-the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth).

JUVÉDERM® is a smooth consistency, synthetic gel made of hyaluronic acid-a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. In fact, studies show superior results of JUVÉDERM® compared to a collagen-based dermal filler. *And, almost 90% of all study volunteers who were treated with both JUVÉDERM® injectable gel and another dermal filler* preferred JUVÉDERM®! In addition, JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective for persons of color.

With JUVÉDERM® the injection process takes only about 15 minutes and results are immediate. Plus, there's minimal recovery or downtime. So you can step into your doctor's office for treatment and step right back into your life.

How JUVÉDERM® Works?

JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is a nonsurgical, physician-administered treatment. JUVÉDERM® is eased under the skin using a fine needle to augment, or fill, the soft tissue of the dermis-the dense inner layer of skin beneath the epidermis-to add volume and diminish wrinkles and folds. JUVÉDERM® injectable gel is used most effectively for those wrinkles and folds in the lower third of your face, like your "laugh lines", "smile lines" (nasolabial folds), or "marionette lines" (oral commissures).

JUVÉDERM® is a "next-generation" filler. It is made from hyaluronic acid-a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to hydrate and add volume. Hyaluronic acid may diminish with age, contributing to the formation of wrinkles and folds. JUVÉDERM® injectable gel works to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in your skin, helping to smooth wrinkles and folds.

JUVÉDERM® employs its unique manufacturing process to provide the highest concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid of any available hyaluronic acid dermal filler for long-lasting results.

Side effects were usually mild to moderate lasting 7 days or less and included temporary injection site reactions like redness, pain, firmness, swelling and bumps.

What to Expect During Treatment?

Before you go: Some doctors recommend that you avoid any medications that can prolong bleeding, such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, for at least a week prior to treatment in order to reduce the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

When you arrive: If this is your first visit, your healthcare professional will ask about your medical history, including any allergies you may have or medications you may take, and will tell you more about wrinkle treatment with JUVÉDERM®. JUVÉDERM® injectable gel does not require an allergy test.

The procedure: Our Clinic is using JUVÉDERM® ULTRA with local anasthetic incorporated into the filler for a more comfortable experience. Your healthcare professional will ease the JUVÉDERM® injectable gel under your skin to augment, or fill, wrinkles and folds. Following the injection, your healthcare professional may gently massage the treated areas. The procedure is quick and easy. The injection itself usually takes only about 15 minutes.

After the procedure: With JUVÉDERM®, there is minimal recovery or downtime.

For the first 24 hours following treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcoholic beverages in order to help minimize the risks of temporary redness, swelling, and/or itching at the treatment sites. After the treatment, some temporary injection-related reactions may occur, including redness, pain, firmness, swelling, and bumps. Studies have shown that these are usually mild to moderate in nature and clear up on their own in 7 days or less. If you experience swelling at the injection site, you can apply an ice pack for a brief period. Your healthcare professional will tell you when makeup may be applied after your treatment.

Seeing results: You should see an immediate improvement in the treatment areas. Most patients need one treatment to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, and the results last up to 6 months or more. However, results may vary and correction is temporary. Supplemental "touch up" treatments may be required to achieve and maintain optimal results.
