Scar treatment

Scars

Although scars are a natural part of the skin’s healing process, they can cause pain, inconvenience, and self-consciousness. Most small scars will become nearly invisible if given enough time to heal, but for scars that are large, thick, indented, or raised, scar treatment is available to reduce their appearance. Laser scar removal is an excellent option for this.

Causes of Scars

Scarring can result from virtually anything that damages the skin, from chicken pox to sports injuries and surgery. The more severely the skin is damaged, the longer it will take to heal and the more likely it is that a noticeable scar will develop. Fortunately, most scars are highly treatable. The type of scar treatment your dermatologist recommends will depend on the cause of the scar.

Laser Scar Removal

Laser scar removal is another excellent option for minimizing the appearance of scars caused by acne, surgery, or other factors. Using a high-energy light, your doctor can remove or reshape areas of the skin that are affected by scar tissue. There are several different types of laser scar removal available, each optimally suited for a specific type of scar. Raised and reddened scars can be treated using a pulsed dye laser, while acne scares are best treated using facial fractional laser treatment.

Important things to note before starting the treatment:
  • individual consultation is needed before beginning the treatment
  • 1-3 treatments are needed every 4 weeks to reach the required results
  • do not expose yourself to direct sunlight 4 weeks before the treatment (using sunscreen is  compulsory!)
  • if the patient’s skin is prone to pigmentation they have to apply skin whitening cream before the treatment
  • if the patient is prone to herpes they have to take medication for it before starting the treatment

Things to note after the treatment:

  • after the treatment a strong redness, swelling and sloughing appears on the areas affected for 3-5 days, then the skin begins to slightly exfoliate, and the patient can return to work after 3 days wearing make-up, after about 1 week the marks of the treatment disappear completely
  • as a follow-up treatment rinse the treated area with water and apply a thick layer of cream
  • during the 4 weeks following the treatment the patient must use a high SPF (at least 50) sunscreen, and those whose skin is prone to pigmentation should apply skin whitening cream
  • the treatment can be repeated after 4 week
