Laser Hair Removal

Our laser hair removal treatments are suitable for all skin types on the Fitzpatrick skin type scale! Our lasers are safe to use all year round, even on tanned skin! There is no more need to suspend the treatment during the summer! Our newest laser are Soprano ICE Platinum and Titanium (2022), which offers the synergistic benefits of the 3 most effective wavelengths (Alex, Diode, Nd:Yag) for hair removal, each targeting different structures within the hair follicle.

The non-invasive laser light works its magic to destroy the root, halting hair growth by destroying the hair follicle in the growth phase. Hair grows in different stages: growing, resting and shedding. 10-15% of the hair is in the growth stage at a given time, that's why multiple treatments are needed to desable all the hair follicles. The hair follicles that are in dormant phase are not affected by the treatment. Light based hair removal is ideal for those looking for a more permanent solution in hair removal. At Medaid we tailor your laser or IPL hair removal treatments to suit your skin tone and colour of your hair to ensure all treatment have the best results.

Appointments are flexible: with lunch time and evening appointments available, we can fit you in between meetings or after you finish work!

Laser hair removal is a safe, almost painless method of removing unwanted hair. It works by focusing a laser beam at the base of the hair follicle, halting hair growth. Laser hair removal is different to the Intense Pulsed Light system (IPL) which uses less powerful, diffused light waves. Most people choose laser hair removal as it is considered the highest quality, most safe and effective way to remove unwanted hair from visible areas. Not everyone responds the same each laser which is why we have invested in a variety. We will advise on consultation which laser machine will be suited for you and your needs.

Before any Laser or IPL hair removal treatment, the client has a consultation with one of our laser specialists, in which a medical history is taken to confirm suitability for treatment. Your skin type will be decided, and if needed the practitoner will conduct a patch test on a laser to decide which is more suitable for you.

Our experienced staff explain fully and provide you with goggles to protect your eyes. Cold air or cooling gel will be applied to the treated area to soothe the skin. Few people experience pain during treatment, however some may experience light stinging or tingling during the session. Depending on the area being treated, hair removal procedures could take between 5 and 90 minutes. The area will need to be treated every 4-6 weeks for around 8 months to achieve the best results. The skin may appear red and/or swollen immediately afterwards, however this should reduce over 24 hours.

Although laser is very safe, it is important to resolve any skin conditions and to let any sun tan fade before treatment. It is also sensible to protect the skin from sunlight as it will be highly sensitive (SPF 50). Our lasers can be used on tanned skin, but 3 days before and after treatment it is not recommended to sunbathe.

Pale skin is most suited to laser hair removal, but it is ineffective on hair with little pigmentation, such as white, blond or grey hair. Darker hair responds very well to the treatment, but darker skin tends to be more delicate. In our Clinic using the latest technologies all patients can count on the best results.

Laser vs IPL

Laser vs IPL

Both treatments produce energy in order to disrupt the growth element of each hair follicle to reduce hair growth. However, this is where the similarity ends.

Laser

A laser is an intensely concentrated beam of light. The energy is extremely focused rather than diffuse so it is very precise, offering more powerful, accurate results. During an initial consultation we carefully tune the laser to your individual skin and hair type, ensuring the best possible results on all skin shades and types.

IPL

In basic terms, IPL is far less effective than Laser hair removal. The energy is produced by a lamp, a little like a light bulb, and produces a variety of light waves, meaning that it is more diffuse and less powerful. It is usually limited to use on fairer skin types, Fitzpatrick 1-3.

There are a number of devices available which use light for hair removal treatments however Laser hair removal has several advantages over IPL:

  •     Lasers use the exact wavelength needed to effectively treat the hair in each pulse.
  •     IPL uses hundreds of wavelength in each pulse which will not always have effect on reducing the growth of the hair.
  •     Laser pulses are very short and are combined with cooling to minimise build up of heat on the skin.
  •     Laser treatments can be done on larger areas, like the legs and back, but with IPL might have to make a break in the middle of the treatment.
  •     Laser hair removal is not as painful as treatments like electrolysis or waxing.
  •     Lasers allow specialists to customise treatments to patients specific skin tone and hair colour.

Medaid Clinic has 4 state of the art laser hair removal machines, this allows us to treat all skin types! The Italian Q-Plus Star 1 of QuantaSystem is an ND:YAG laser providing safe hair removal for also darker skin types, Fitzpatrick 4-6.

Our other gold standard laser for hair removal can be used all year round is Diode laser of MeDioStar-NeXT PRO Asclepion from Germany. This type of diode laser allows the treatment of all skin types (I to VI), including tanned skin. There is no more need to suspend the treatment during the summer and not to treat very dark skin types. Our Alexandrite laser is the MeDioStar NeXT PRO ALeX which is the the best for fine hair.

Our newest (2022 July) laser is the Soprano ICE Titanium. The 3in1 solution offers the synergistic benefits of the 3 most effective wavelengths (Alex, Diode, Nd:Yag) for hair removal, each targeting different structures within the hair follicle.

Not everyone responds the same each laser which is why we have invested in a variety. We will advise on consultation which laser machine will be suited for you and your needs. We may choose to carry out a patch test on multiple lasers in order to find the best solution to banish your unwanted hair! Both lasers are using gel that eliminates a common problem of missed or skipped spots.

Pros/Cons

The Pros

  • Hair reduction can make a world of difference. Laser hair removal is a non-invasive, gentle technique that reduces undesirable hair from most parts of the body. While you might not get totally smooth and silky forever, hair should be less noticeable and require less shaving or waxing. According to worldwide researches, laser hair removal treatments can reduce hair counts from 40% to 80%.
  • Little hair growth is needed for treatments. Depending on the type of laser, hair can either be continually shaved, including the day of treatment, or only require a few days worth of growth. For IPL treatment hair can be continually shaved, but not including two days before and the day of treatment.
  • Laser hair removal treatments aren't extremely time consuming. Large areas can be treated all at once, as opposed to electrolysis which requires each follicle individually treated. A laser treatment done on the back takes about 30 minutes.
  • Minimal discomfort. In most cases, minimal pain should be experienced and no anesthesia is required. The discomfort level varies on the person's hair type, body area getting treated, and one's personal threshold. Getting a laser hair removal treatment is likened to a rubber band snapping against the skin. The first session generally hurts the most, and then subsides with further visits. People with very thick, dark hair often feel a bit more pain than those with thin hair, because darker hair absorbs more of the laser light.
  • No downtime.

The Cons

  • Scarring, blisters and burns can occur. Although it's not very common, these are still possible side effects. Occasionally patients may experience slight redness of the skin or mild swelling around the hairs.
  • Sunscreen is recommended for any area treated that may be exposed to the sun. From the first treatment until the end of the treatments, the patient has to use sunscreen when going outdoors because a smaller inflammation occurs on the treated areas and inflamed skin is more prone to tanning than undamaged skin.
  • Multiple treatments are needed. It's not a one hit wonder. Laser hair removal only affects actively growing hair, and not all hair follicles are active at the same time. Usually 8 treatments are needed, spaced out about a month apart to achieve the best hair reduction results.
  • Not everybody is a candidate. Because laser targets darkness, people with dark hair and light skin are better suited for laser treatments. The procedure may not be as effective on persons with gray, red or blonde hair.
  • During the treatment (that is, starting with the month before the first treatment until the time of the last treatment) the treated areas should not be waxed, plucked, or the hairs pulled out with any other method.

Laser hair removal FAQ

Getting Rid of Unwanted Hair: Laser Hair Removal

What lasers hair removal machines do we have?

There are four kinds of laser light used for the removal of unwanted hair: Alexandrite, Ruby, Diode and LP Nd:Yag. In our Clinic we use the 3 state of the art lasers: Long Pulse Nd:YAG, Alexandrit, Diode, and the newest the 3in1.

The Italian Q-Plus Star 1 of QuantaSystem is an ND:YAG laser providing safe hair removal for darker skin types, Fitzpatrick 4-6. It is great for people with darker skin as there is much less melanin (pigment) absorption than with shorter visible light wavelengths. So it will greatly reduce the chance of any side effects.

The advantage with Nd:YAG is that as the wavelength is longer (1065nm infrared wavelength), there is much deeper penetration into the dermis 4-5mm with much less risk of pigmentation changes. It also has a fast repetition rate and can be used on larger areas of skin like the legs and back. 'Nd' stands for Neodymium, and 'YAG' stands for Yttrium Aluminium Garnet. Nd:YAG is also great at deep hair follicles such as woman with PCOS or for the removal men’s beards/facial hair.

Our other gold standard laser for hair removal is Diode laser of MeDioStar-NeXT Asclepion from Germany. Diode systems deliver a longer wavelength (810nm) than the Alexandrite (755 nm) systems. Penetrating deeper into the dermis inhibiting follicular growth areas without causing as much epidermal injury as Alexandrite lasers. Diode lasers are more adapted for darker skin colours than IPL or Alexandrite, but less then Nd:YAG. All though thanks to variable pulse length (up to 400ms) MeDioStar-NeXT is recommended to use for all skin types, all year round.

Our newest (2022 July) laser is the Soprano ICE Platinum and Soprano Ice Titanium The 3in1 solution offers the synergistic benefits of the 3 most effective wavelengths (Alex, Diode, Nd:Yag) for hair removal, each targeting different structures within the hair follicle.

The laser technician may control several factors to customize treatment for each patient. We may adjust the pulse length, as long pulsed lasers are considered safest. The technician may also adjust the fluence, as the selection of energy levels may be altered depending on the skin type of the patient. The delay, which is the time in between pulses of light, may be adjusted as well to allow the skin and hair follicles to cool between the pulses. The technician may also adjust the spot size, which affects the speed and penetration of the laser. Larger spot sizes penetrate deeper and a wide selection of spot sizes allows the technician to reach the hair where it grows.

Why choose laser hair removal over other treatments?

  •     It is far more effective and provides faster results than IPL and electrolysis
  •     Never shave again once your course is completed
  •     Saves you money in the long term on waxing and the effort of shaving everyday
  •     It helps reduce ingrown hairs
  •     Most clients see a result after their 2nd treatment, or even on their 1st laser treatment!
  •     A maximum of 10-30% reduction on hair each time!

How does laser hair removal actually work?

The lasers used for laser hair removal are aimed at the certain area of the skin then selectively absorb pigment in to the hair follicle. The pigment is heated and the hair follicle is destroyed without damaging the surrounding tissue. The hair will slowly start to fall out, roots that have been destroyed in that session will not produce another hair.

How is laser hair removal treatment conducted?

This depends on the laser: Diode and Nd:YAG hair removal lasers can be used with gel. The laser head is placed on the skin and short pulses are released. However, to cool the skin both have a cryogen attachment, which discharges constant cold air at the same time as the laser to cool the skin.

Who is suitable for laser hair removal treatment?

All skin types are suitable for laser hair removal as we have a variety of lasers. The best results are achieved with clients who have lighter skin and dark hair. Dark hair is more easily treated as it has a high concentration of the pigment melanin. Fair hair has less melanin and is more difficult to treat and may require more treatments or one of our stronger lasers. Grey/white/red/blonde hair has no melanin and is not suitable for laser treatment.

What does laser treatment feel like?

This depends on the person, the colour and density of the hair and the area. Other factors include the type of laser used and for women- the time of the month. Our Diode and Nd:YAG lasers have the cool air which reduces the pain greatly, although some more sensitive areas can feel like an elastic band hitting against the skin.

Some clients like to use local anesthetic cream prior to treatment, which can really help for people with a low pain tollerance. In our Clinic we provide this option for your request.

How does it look after laser hair removal treatment?

The skin normally has Erythema (reddening of the skin) after treatment as well as swelling around the follicles, darker hair will absorb more heat and, therefore, may in some clients produce a stronger reaction. This can last from 24 hours to 3 weeks, depending on the person.

The lasered hairs are shed after 2 – 3 weeks and fall naturally from the skin. During this period, the hairs will seem to ‘grow’ as they are pushed out by the new skin. There may be a period of having no hair for a few weeks, depending on the client's growth cycle, then the hair in the Anagen growth phase will begin to show again, typically finer and more slowly than before.

After the 1st treatment, depending on skin and hair type the area can begin to look patchy.

Are there any side effects of laser hair removal treatment?

The skin may be red immediately after treatment and the hair follicles where the skin has been treated may be raised and bumpy, this usually subsides within a few hours. Very few people experience itching a few days later as the hair is pushed out. Stronger reactions are rare, but side effects can include blistering and hyper/hypopigmentation. This risk is greatly reduced when clients follow after care instructions and do not tan prior to and after treatments.

How many laser treatments are needed and how often?

The laser light targets only hair that is actively growing in the Anaphase. Therefore multiple treatments are necessary to be able to hit hair at other stages of growth. Treatment is conducted every 2-4 weeks on the face and 4-8 weeks on the body. The required number of treatments varies, but usually 8-10 are needed for optimum results, following that top up treatments are required for most clients, typically 1 treatment 6 months after a course and then another 6 months following that. This is because a percentage of hair on your body will be dormant throughout your laser sessions and therefore will not be hit with the laser.

Men usually require more laser hair removal sessions than women due to testosterone levels. As well as women with hormonal imbalances- a visible sign of this is hair appearing on the chin area. We ask clients in this case to have a blood test at the Doctors before commencing treatments, so that we can give a better indication on expected results.

How long does each laser hair removal treatment take?

Laser hair removal sessions can take from 5 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on the size of the area. For example upper lip takes 5 minutes whereas full legs or back could be at least 45 minutes. With lunch time and evening appointments available, we can fit you in between meetings or after you finish work!

Will I need a Patch test even if I have had laser before?

Yes, everyone needs a patch test. This is standard practice. A patch test, on various energies will be conducted on the area that is intended for treatment. Hair that has had multiple laser sessions will be finer and require high energies to remove the hair effectively.

Laser Hair Removal Benefits

  •     A non-invasive, gentle technique that reduces undesirable hair from most parts of the body
  •     Treats larger areas effectively because it disables more than one hair at a time
  •     Minimal discomfort
  •     Replaces waxing, electrolysis, shaving and bleaching
  •     No downtime

Laser Hair Removal Considerations

  •     Laser hair removal is an ongoing process that requires multiple sessions because it only affects actively growing hair, and not all hair follicles are active at the same time.
  •     Occasionally patients may experience slight redness of the skin or mild swelling around the hairs
  •     Sunscreen is recommended for any area treated that may be exposed to the sun
  •     Patients with darker skin may not respond well due to inadequate discrepancy between skin and hair colors
  •     Blonde or gray/white hair is less responsive due to lack of ample pigment in the hair

Who cannot be treated:

  • anyone who takes medicine or herbs that make them sensitive to light;
  • anyone who has epilepsy, Lupus or Porphyria;
  • pregnant women or women who plan pregnancy;
  • a woman who has given birth within the past month or is currently breastfeeding;
  • anyone suffering from a tumour disease;
  • a person who has taken some kind of medicine for acne within the 6 months before the treatment;
  • a person who takes anti-coagulants;
  • a person who is prone to the formation of keloids;
  • anyone who has vitiligo spots on the area to be treated;
  • anyone who has active herpes on the area to be treated;
  • anyone who has eczema on the area to be treated;

Patients with diabetes or hormone diseases must consult their doctors before starting the treatment!

Soprano ICE Platinum &Titanium

The Soprano ICE Platinum combines 3 laser wavelengths into a single innovative handpiece, simultaneously targeting different tissue depths as well as anatomical structures within the hair follicle. By combining the absorption and penetration levels of three different wavelengths, Soprano ICE Platinum achieves the safest and most comprehensive hair removal treatment available today.

TRIO CLUSTERED DIODE TECHNOLOGY

Soprano ICE Platinum and Titanium offers the synergistic benefits of the 3 most effective wavelengths for hair removal, each targeting different structures within the hair follicle. The 3 main anatomical targets include the Bulge, Bulb and Papilla.

Soprano Ice Platinum

ALEX 755NM WAVELENGTH

The Alexandrite wavelength offers more powerful energy absorption by the melanin chromophore, making it ideal for the widest range of hair types and color- especially light-colored and thin hair. With more superficial penetration, the 755nm wavelength targets the Bulge of the hair follicle and is especially effective for superficially embedded hair in areas such as the eyebrows and upper lip.

SPEED 810NM WAVELENGTH

The classic wavelength in laser hair removal, the 810nm wavelength, offers deep penetration of the hair follicle with high average power, a high repetition rate and a large 2cm spot size for fast treatment. The 810nm has a moderate melanin absorption level making it safe for darker skin types. Its deep penetration capabilities target the Bulge and Bulb of the hair follicle while moderate tissue depth penetration makes it ideal for treating the arms, legs, cheeks and beard.

YAG 1064NM WAVELENGTH

The YAG 1064 wavelength is characterized by lower melanin absorption, making it a focused solution for darker skin types. At the same time, the 1064nm offers the deepest penetration of the hair follicle, allowing it to target the Bulb and Papilla, as well as treat deeply embedded hair in areas such as the scalp, arm pits and pubic areas. With higher water absorption generating a higher temperature, the incorporation of the 1064nm wavelength increases the thermal profile of the overall laser treatment for most effective hair removal.

SHR

SHR is Alma Laser’s proprietary hair removal method used in clinics around the world. It is the only clinically proven method of laser hair removal that is virtually painless.

The Soprano ICE Platinum incorporates Alma’s SHR method, ensuring safe and comfortable hair removal. Rather than exposing hair follicles to a single high energy pulse which can cause trauma to the skin, SHR works by gradually heating the dermis to a temperature that effectively damages the hair follicles and prevents re-growth, while avoiding injury to the surrounding tissue.

A high repetition rate of short pulses are delivered deep into the dermis, achieving high average power and therapeutically effective heat build-up. The sweeping In-motion technique of moving the applicator repeatedly over the treatment area ensures full coverage while ICE tech cools the skin surface- preventing superficial burns and allowing for virtually painless yet highly effective hair removal.

In between Laser hair removal treatments advice

  • You may continue to shave or use depilatory creams if you wish to keep the treated area ‘hair free’. However it is not advisable to pluck or wax the area between treatments as this disturbs the hair growth cycle which can make subsequent treatments less effective.
  • When returning for follow-on treatment please ensure that 1-2 mm of hair is visible on the surface of your skin. You must also ensure that the area to be treated is not tanned.
  • With MeDioStar-NeXT or Soprano ICE Platinum we can also treat tanned skin.

After treatment advice

  • It is common to experience some redness and in some instances a heat rash. This should have dissipated in one to eight hours following treatment.
  • Occasionally superficial ‘skin flaking’ is experienced. This is a normal temporary reaction. The following skin care is advised: apply soothing cream such as Aloe Vera gel or after-sun lotion and continue your normal skin care routine.
  • If any ‘abnormal’ side affects occur then please apply Vaseline ointment to the area and contact one of our Therapists at the clinic for advice.
  • We expect your treated hair roots to fall out in between treatments. We do not recommend you pluck these hairs however we do suggest the gentle exfoliation except on irritated skin.
  • Please ensure that direct exposure of treated areas to the sun is avoided. Except: if you are treated with MeDioStar NeXT! When outdoors protect treated areas by using a complete sun block (factor 50). Ideally the area should not be exposed to direct sunlight until your course of treatment is complete and you are satisfied you will not be having further treatment to that area.
  • Treatment with MeDioStar NeXT is allowed on tanned skin! For IPL or other laser treatment patients who are unsure if they are too tanned are invited for treatment to attend our clinic for a complimentary melanin check at least 3 days prior to their treatment to determine if treatment can go ahead as planned.
  • It is strongly advised that all laser patients remain at the clinic for as long as necessary so that the treated area is adequately cooled with the aid of ice packs.
